Principal's Message

The staff and administration of Desert View Elementary welcome our returning and new scholars and their families to the 2019-2020 academic year.

As we continue to offer a diverse and quality education to our scholars, we invite parents to be our partners in this special journey. Each of us is critical to the learning and success that will happen for each scholar this year. Each of us is asked to be committed to the development of the whole child by collaborating, communicating and supporting the little steps/accomplishments as well as the big steps/accomplishments that are envisioned for each child.

At Desert View Elementary, we truly act upon our belief that “Every Student Counts; Every Moment Matters.” While our staff will continue to build on the mathematical practices necessary for each scholar to understand, practice and extend their mathematical thinking, our school-wide focus this year will expand deeper and wider into English Language Development with an emphasis on each of the components of reading (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary Development (which includes higher level academic content specific words) and Comprehension (which includes the scholars’ skill development in analysis, evaluation and synthesis).

As our partners at home, please encourage your child to read each night and to discuss with you what he/she has read. Your child’s teacher and our library assistant would be more than happy to assist your child in choosing appropriate reading materials. Do make the time to read together, make predictions about what is being read, discuss characters and their motives, compare and contrast different characters/books, ask your child to tell in his/her own words what they have read or visualized as they were reading. While television is a part of your child’s daily entertainment, may we also suggest that closed captioning be an option that is added to the TV viewing so print and visual can be used as a tool to increase your child’s reading skills.

Our plans for the academic year include many opportunities for parents/guardians to be a part of their child’s great learning adventure. Please do participate as much as you can and do communicate with your child’s teacher on an on-going basis. Together, we do make a difference for each scholar to succeed. Together, we can “prepare, empower and inspire each scholar to reach his/her maximum potential.”

It is our hope and goal that this year’s learning adventure be a positive, engaging and enriching learning experience for each scholar and their parents/guardians.
